In Untold Stories: Maverick’s Monacan Homeland, Young Maverick learns from his great-grandmother, Chief Diane Shields, who teaches him about Monacan values, historical moments for the Monacan Nation, his culture, their hardships, and the joys of being a citizen of the Monacan Nation.

This book, geared for students in Virginia Public Schools and meeting state Standards of Learning, is a project by UVA's Spring 2025 class, ENWR 2520: Community Engagement with UVA’s Indigenous History, in which UVA students interviewed tribal elders at the Monacan Indian Nation Headquarters.

Teresa Pollak of the Monacan Indian Nation, and Sarah Richardson, course professor, will discuss the creation of this book.
