This spring, gallery walls throughout Charlottesville are being hung with Indigenous art from Australia and Oceania. Why? Because Charlottesville boasts the only museum in the United States dedicated solely to it. Indigenous artists use art to express the power and beauty of their culture, across cultures. Many artists are drawing on their cultural traditions while innovating with a wide range of materials and ideas. This ability to speak across cultural borders without losing its distinctive identity makes Indigenous Australian art some of the most powerful art being produced anywhere today.
Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, in collaboration with The Fralin Museum of Art, Second Street Gallery, Les Yeux du Monde, and The Rotunda, presents the Charlottesville Indigenous Art Takeover 2024.
